When you need a new consumer unit?

You probably need a fuse board upgrade if your existing installation is a wooden or metal-clad rewireable fuse box (pre-1980s), a plastic consumer unit that does not meet modern 17th Edition Amendment 3 requirements (introduced in 2016), a split-load board without RCD protection on every circuit, or if the unit is repeatedly tripping or showing signs of heat damage. An upgrade may also be required where it has been identified in an EICR with C1 or C2 defects, or where additional capacity is needed for new installations such as EV chargers, heat pumps, electric showers or kitchen extensions.

The current 18th Edition regulations require RCD or RCBO protection on most final circuits (typically 30mA), metal consumer unit enclosures in domestic properties, the installation of Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) in most modern systems, and additional AFDD protection in higher-risk environments such as HMOs and care homes.

Why Choose Us

Maxim Electrical Contractors are NICEIC-approved, with all fuse board replacements fully certified and notified to Building Control through our Competent Person Scheme, ensuring every installation meets current BS 7671 requirements and compliance standards without the need for separate applications. We provide fixed-price quotations upfront, with no hidden extras or unexpected costs, giving clear and transparent pricing for every job.

Most domestic consumer unit upgrades are completed the same day to minimise disruption and restore full electrical safety as quickly as possible. Every installation is upgraded to a modern RCBO-per-circuit configuration as standard, rather than outdated split-load systems, improving protection, fault isolation and overall system reliability. All work is fully tested, certified and supported with a 12-month workmanship warranty, alongside manufacturer guarantees on the installed consumer unit for additional long-term assurance.

NICEIC-Registered Experts

Maxim Electrical Contractors are fully NICEIC-registered, ensuring all fuse board replacement and consumer unit upgrade work is completed in line with the highest UK electrical standards.

Fixed Price, No Hidden Costs

We provide clear, fixed-price quotations before any work begins, with no hidden extras or unexpected charges. This ensures transparent pricing for every consumer unit upgrade, whether domestic, commercial or part of a larger electrical improvement project.

Full RCBO Protection as Standard

Every upgrade includes a full RCBO-per-circuit configuration as standard, replacing older split-load systems. This improves electrical safety by isolating faults to individual circuits, reducing the risk of total power loss and improving overall system reliability.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a fuse board replacement take?

A standard domestic consumer unit replacement takes 4 to 6 hours, including testing and certification. Larger properties, three-phase boards or commercial sub-mains take longer. Most jobs are completed in a single working day.

Will I lose power during a consumer unit upgrade?

Yes, the supply must be isolated for the duration of the swap. We schedule jobs to minimise downtime - most domestic upgrades have power restored the same day, often within 4 to 6 hours of arrival.

Do I need to upgrade my fuse board to 18th edition?

There is no legal requirement to upgrade an older board that is still safe and serviceable, but the 18th Edition (BS 7671) requires RCD protection on most circuits, AFDD protection where applicable, and metal enclosures in domestic settings. Older wooden-back, plastic, rewireable-fuse and split-load boards often fail current standards on inspection.

Do you provide an Electrical Installation Certificate?

Yes. Every consumer unit replacement is signed off with a full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and registered with Building Control under our NICEIC notification scheme - you do not need to apply separately.

What is the difference between a fuse board and a consumer unit?

They are the same thing. "Fuse board" is the older name from when boards used rewirable fuses. Modern boards are technically "consumer units" using miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current devices (RCDs) and arc fault detection (AFDDs).

Can you upgrade a commercial or three-phase board?

Yes. We replace and upgrade commercial single-phase, three-phase and TP&N distribution boards, including isolating, re-feeding and re-certifying sub-circuits. We schedule out-of-hours work to keep your business running.
